10 Ways on How to Reset Genie Garage Door Opener After Power Outage

1. Check the Circuit Breaker:

If the circuit breaker is on, you should be able to reset it with a simple flip. However, if it’s off, you will have to turn it back on before attempting to open your garage door. The same goes for the power switch in case there is one inside or near your garage.

2. Check the Battery:

Reset your garage door opener if the digital display reads “LOC” or shows an error code. If this is the case, you may have to replace the battery. But, first, remove it from its compartment and replace it with a fresh 9-volt alkaline battery.

3. Check the Fuse:

If you have a circuit breaker, it means there is a fuse as well. The “circuit” of your garage door opener runs from the battery to the receiver located on the unit’s side. Check if this fuse has been blown and replace it with a new one if needed. Be sure that the replacement fuse matches the amperage requirement indicated on the opener.

4. Reset Your Unit:

If the battery is not the cause of your garage door’s failure, then you should be able to reset it. You can do this by accessing the control panel on the unit and pressing its “reset” button. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for more details.

5. Replace Your Battery:

Sometimes all you need to do is replace your battery, and this should do the trick. First, check if your opener’s display is still not working and if it does, replace the battery with a new one. The same goes for any other indicator lights on the unit.

6. Check Your Power Cord:

If you have an opener with a grounded power cord, check the connections to ensure they are tight. The same goes for the other lines on your unit. Go over each wire until you find out which one has come loose or has been disconnected.

7. Check the Switch:

Check if your garage door opener’s wall control is functioning. If it is not, check the connections for any loose wires. Also, check if you have accidentally bumped it to a position other than on.

8. Remove & Replace Your Remote:

If all else fails, you can try replacing your remote control. Since this is what controls the unit’s movements when it suddenly stops working, it may be the reason why you are unable to open your garage door.

Remove it from its receiver port and replace it with a new one. The same goes for the batteries inside the remote control. If this does not work, you can try re-syncing your remote’s position with your opener by pressing any button on it for three seconds.

9. Reset the Safety Sensors:

If your remote control does not work, you should be able to get your garage door open by pressing the safety switch buttons located on both sides of it. You can also try moving them up or down to reset the sensors. If this fails, you may have to replace these sensors.

10. Check the Motor Unit’s Connection:

If you have made it this far, but the garage door still won’t budge, and none of your opener’s components seem to be at fault, then there may be a problem with the motor unit. The connections here can loosen over time, and this will affect all of the device’s operations. You will need to reinstall or replace any loose or malfunctioning components.

Some Tips and Suggestions

1. When power comes back on, there may be enough ‘juice’ left in the older-style transformers to operate off-grid for short periods while your GDO is disconnected and moved away from the wall.

2. If using the old-style wall control, aim it carefully, so you don’t have to keep pressing the button multiple times to transmit the signal.

3. For old-style wall controls, if you’re having problems sending the signal to the GDO, try aiming it in different positions around the opener itself. If necessary, disconnect and move your genie away from the wall a bit before trying again.

4. Connecting all three wires on one side fixed the problem with my old-style wall control. Still, you’ll probably want to disconnect the wires leading into the opener itself (the white wire, in particular).

5. When reconnecting all three wires on one side of your GDO, use your screwdriver again to push in any light bulb bases that were pulled loose when you removed your light bulbs.

6. If your GDO is already ‘down’ at the end of a chain, you will need to use a ladder to move it back away from the wall far enough to reach the three wiring connections on one side.
